The Dolphins extended their undefeated all-time record over St. Josephs College-Brooklyn to 13 as they fought for a 58-50 victory on Monday evening at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center. CSI extended their record to 5-10 while the Bears dropped to a 7-12 record.
CSI started the first stanza with a strong 10-0 run including two three-point goals by Allie Shanahan. It wasn’t until the 15:00 mark that the Bears made a notch on the scoreboard behind Ashley McQuillan’s left side jumper. Returning baskets back-and-forth, it was at 9:50 that St. Joseph’s closed the gap to two behind a layup by Megan Moran and a 3 point goal by McQuillan. CSI pulled away again with a 6-0 run for a 20-12 lead with 6:50 to go. The teams traded short runs with the Bears ending the second half on a 4-0 run with .36 and putting the score at 25-21.
Katelyn Hepworth and Shanahan combined for 23 rebounds and 13 points to end the half. The Dolphins shot poorly from the free throw line shooting 2-for-10.
The Bears opened the second half with two made free throws by to close the Dolphins lead to two. The teams went bucket-for-bucket throughout the half cutting the gap as close as one point on two occasions; 12:50 with a Doran layup and 30 seconds later at 12:20 in a McQuillan jumper. From there CSI reached to their greatest lead of 9 at the 7 minute mark. A Nicole Quattrochi three pointer at 2:15 put CSI ahead by 6, the Bears began to foul to gain possession. Two fouls by Doran brought CSI to the line in a 10 second period of time. CSI made just one free throw to put the score at 54-47. A made three pointer by SJ and a timeout saw the score at 54-50 with 31 seconds remaining. Doran fouled out bringing Hepworth to line where she sunk both free throws, 58-50. A Quattrocchi foul at 4 seconds gave St. Joe’s their last chance for a score.
CSI bettered their second half free throws shooting 50%. St. Joe’s finished the game shooting 70% from the foul line. Both teams had 20 turnovers apiece.
The Dolphins were led by Shanahan with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Hepworth added a worthy performance of 13 points and 17 rebounds. Jaclyn Tocco added 7 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Quattrocchi added nine points.
The Bears were led by McQuillan’s 15 points. Doran and Teresa Mangan added 10 points apiece.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Lehman College at 5:30 pm.
