Staten Islanders lose their lives to breast cancer more often than in the rest of the city, state, and nation.

In an effort to combat this devastating disease, and to remember family members and friends lost and lives changed, Dr. Donna Gerstle, Director of the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative (SIBCRI), and hundreds of Staten Islanders will gather on Saturday morning, October 1, on the CSI campus, for the Breast Cancer Walkathon. The Walkathon is sponsored, in part, by Con Edison.

I cannot attend the Breast Cancer Walkathon, but will click here to make a donation or sponsor a walker in support of the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative.

The CSI Breast Cancer Walkathon will be the opening event to CSI’s first annual Homecoming Day. As the premier event for CSI’s Homecoming Day, the Walkathon will showcase the SIBCRI’s “Live Green, Embrace Pink” slogan as a part of the event’s central theme of promoting greener practices and energy efficiency in everyday life, as well as to educate and increase awareness of breast cancer. As it takes place on Oct. 1, the CSI Breast Cancer Walkathon is also the ideal event to welcome in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Hand-knitted scarfs and blankets, lovingly crafted by residents from Sunrise of Staten Island and supportive community groups across the country, will be available for purchase to support the SIBCRI and Dr. Gerstle’s research, as she is determined to find out why there is a high correlation between length of residency and mortality from breast cancer. Her quest in the laboratories of the CSI Center for the Environmental Science involves long hours reviewing a broad spectrum of data. Her enduring commitment is matched by her lifelong passion.

Registration beings at 9:00am on the Great Lawn; the walk begins at 10:00am. Each Walkathon participant will cover the two-kilometer walk route once. [View PDF Map.] Along the Walkathon route, walkers will find “Live Green, Embrace Pink” lawn signs containing facts on how to promote energy efficiency and a greener lifestyle for all, in addition to important facts about breast cancer prevention. At the end of the Walkathon, walkers will have the opportunity to meet with health educators from CSI’s Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative (SIBCRI), and take part in Con Edison’s Energy Trivia.

Registration is required, with a requested donation of $25. For more information call 718.982.2365.
