It hasn’t taken long for College of Staten Island women’s soccer player Demi-Jean Martorano to make an impression on the 2011 season, as the sophomore came out of last week’s action as the City University of New York Athletic Conference’s Player of Week. CSI was one of three CUNYAC squads to be in action last week, scoring a 5-1 win over NYU-Polytechnic in their home opener. Martorano scattered a trio of goals to aid in the win, the third hat trick of her young career.
Playing in only her 17th career game, Martorano had a busy first half playing center midfield as CSI opened up a 2-0 lead. Her forced turnover late in the period led to a Samantha Wysokowski break, leading to a Natalie Tombasco goal to double CSI’s lead. Nursing the two-goal edge going into intermission, Martorano took over in the second half, scoring a natural hat trick to put the game away.
Just over five minutes into the frame, Martorano gathered a Tombasco pass and raced in on her own from about 35-yards to punch a goal in from short range to give CSI a 3-0 edge. Eight minutes later, Tombasco caught Martorano again with a cross from the left side of the box that the sophomore hammered home to score her second marker. Martorano added another beauty with just over seven minutes remaining, a perfect bender via a free kick from the left of goal perfectly tucked into the far side of the post.
The hat trick was the third for Martorano, who now stands 7th in the CSI record book for goals with 19 career tallies. For the game, Martorano registered a total of seven shots, five on goal. CSI next plays SUNY-Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm at the CSI Soccer Complex.
