The College of Staten Island women’s softball team punched its ticket to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament this weekend by virtue of their back-to-back CUNYAC Championship win, and today the Dolphins received their destination. The Dolphins will be heading to Norfolk, Virginia, to play in a four-team, double-elimination field at Virginia-Wesleyan University.

CSI will match up with the host Marlins first. VWU ripped to a 37-5 overall record this season, winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Also participating in the field is Catholic University (23-13) and Christopher Newport University (35-6).

The dates and times for the games are yet to be determined, but information will be available after a conference call later today with the NCAA and all four institutions. A total of 62 teams make up the tournament field. The Regional Round takes place May 9-11, and will feature a double-elimination style format.

2014 marks CSI’s seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. They hold an all-time record of 2-12 in NCAA Tournament play, never having escaped the regional round. CSI’s last win in regional play came in 2007, a 5-3 win over Kings College. CSI holds a 2-1 record all-time against Virginia-Wesleyan, but the last meeting against the two sides was way back in 1990, when CSI took both ends of a doubleheader. CSI has never faced Catholic or Christopher Newport.
