After the opening weekend of the 2014-15 season, the College of Staten Island men’s and women’s basketball teams collected their first set of weekly honors.  Junior Will Fonseca took home Player of the Week honors on the men’s side, while freshman Christina Pasaturo was named Rookie of the Week on the women’s side of the ledger.

In North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, the CSI men made their entry, and the squad went 1-1 this past weekend.  Fonseca was at the center of it all.  The junior who averaged just under 20 minutes per contest a year ago left the floor for only four minutes between the two games and put up some eye-popping numbers in the process.  The power forward registered 28 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday against Salem State, then dropped in an 18-point, 13-rebound effort against host UMass-Dartmouth in a 71-65 win.  Fonseca spread out four assists and a trio of steals as well, and for his efforts was named to the tournament’s all-star team.

Freshman Pasaturo didn’t wait all that long to make a positive entry into her collegiate career.  The Notre Dame Academy product led all CSI scorers in the 80-60 win over the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday, knocking in 21 points on 9-19 shooting, with a team-high 12 rebounds and four steals to go with it.  Pasaturo did it coming off of the bench, contributing 31 minutes.  The next day against Clarkson College, she added another 9 points with five rebounds in 30 minutes.  After two games, she places second on the squad with 15 points per game and second with 8.5 rebounds per contest.

CSI teams return to the hardwood on Wednesday.  The men travel to take on Ramapo College at 7pm while the women will face New York University also on the road at the same time.
