After a tremendous 6-2 week, the College of Staten Island softball team was rewarded handsomely with a pair of weekly citations from The City University of New York Athletic Conference, it was announced today. Senior Brittany Smith powered to Player of the Week honors, while sophomore Jacqueline Cautela was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
Smith was nothing short of astounding in her week at the plate. CSI’s only four-year senior, she posted a gaudy .594 batting average on the week, scattering 19 hits, including five extra bases. Among the big hits was a three-run inside-the-park homerun in CSI’s big, 20-1, win over John Jay on Sunday, where she went 4-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. She scored a total of 19 runs on the week and set a new school record by stealing five bases in a single game in a win over Baruch College this weekend. Smith is batting a healthy .419 this season, and leads the team with 43 runs scored and 26 stolen bases, threatening the CSI single season record in both categories. She is also third on the team in walks with 14.
Cautela did the same damage in the pitcher’s circle last week, going 3-1 with a miniscule 1.64 ERA. Cautela pitched two shutouts along the way, and yielded just 13 hits over 25.2 innings, adding a robust 28 strikeouts. For the season, she leads CSI with a 12-4 mark and a 2.67 ERA.
CSI went 6-2 and captured the 2015 CUNYAC Regular Season Championship on Sunday, as they went 6-0 in CUNYAC play. The team will play four non-conference doubleheaders this week, starting with a double against St. Joseph’s College (LI) on Wednesday, beginning at 5pm at the CSI Softball Complex.
