Rowan University scored four goals in a 26-minute span in the second half to power over the College of Staten Island men’s soccer team, 4-0, as part of non-conference play in Glassboro, NJ, this weekend. The win lifted the Profs to 3-1 this season overall, while the Dolphins slipped to 0-4.
Although the home team tallied up more chances, the shots on goal were even after the first 45 minutes at 2-2, but a tremendous second half by RU was the difference, as the home squad littered the CSI goal with 16 shots, with 12 on goal, to leave little to doubt.
Travis Ward, who scored two goals against the Dolphins last year, cracked the scoring column eight minutes into the second half, powering in a shot in the lower right hand corner of the goal that beat CSI keeper Daniel Raffo. CSI would register the next two shots, but Rowan then took over the pace, and earned a free kick after a CSI foul 13 minutes later. Jake Connors tallied for the Profs bouncing in a rebound on a Shane Doherty kick, making it 2-0.
Doherty added another assist via a corner kick that was powered home by Will Sjaastad, giving Rowan a commanding 3-0 edge in the 76th minute. Reeling, CSI surrendered another less than three minutes later to Ward, who beat Raffo in a one-on-one situation.
Kyle Dennis and Grant Kelly combined for a five-save shutout for RU, as the Profs out-shot CSI overall, 24-8, and enjoyed an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.
CSI will next be in action on Sunday, September 13, when they travel to face Kings College (PA) for a 4pm non-conference affair.
