The College of Staten Island women’s basketball squad rebounded after a tough loss to William Paterson with a 71-42 win over Yeshiva University at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center to improve to 7-4 on the year while the Maccabees dropped their 12th straight to fall to 0-12.
The Maccabees started the game with a deep three-point basket to give Yeshiva their only lead of the game as the Dolphins quickly responded. The Dolphins came out in the beginning of the game a shooting ice cold as they converted only 8 of their 21 shots from the field in the first quarter.. As the quarter wore on the Dolphins settled into the game and their defense started to create fast break opportunities.
The Dolphins weren’t the only ones throwing up bricks, the Maccabees converted just 13% (2-15) at the start of the contest which slipped even further to 12% by the end of the half. Halfway through the second quarter Frances Gonzalez made an outstanding play to keep the ball inbounds. She was able to find Angelique Price under the basket for an easy layup to increase the Dolphin lead.
At the half the Dolphins had a commanding 41-13 lead over Yeshiva. Samantha Flecker and Rosa Perone dominated the boards and combined for 13 of the Dolphins’ 32 rebounds in the first half. CSI was able to hold Yeshiva to just five points in the second quarter which is the third time the Dolphins have done that this season. The last time the Dolphins did that was against CUNYAC opponents Hunter College back on November 24. The women had a strong showing in the paint at the half as they outscored the Maccabees down low 24-4.
Flecker recorded her fifth double-double of the season tonight when she posted a 10 point 11 rebound stat line against the Maccabees. Christina Pasaturo had an efficient game as she shot 5 of 8 for 12 points in 24 minutes of action.
The third quarter was much like the second as the Dolphins continued to outscore the Maccabees and own the paint. Yeshiva did have a scoring streak of their own and put up 12 points in the third which was the same amount of points they scored in the first two quarters combined.
With a 34-point lead heading into the final stanza, the Dolphins slowed down their scoring onslaught and ran down the shot clock before attacking the basket. Gonzalez put up her highest point total of the season with an eight point outing in 18 minutes of action. CSI improved from the free throw line tonight and sank 9 of 14 attempts (64%) which is up 14% from the previous game.
Perone finished the game with 13 points, the highest for the Dolphins tonight, and eight rebounds, both of which are career highs. Victoria Gallinaro continues to struggle from three-point range on the year but is excelling on the boards and recorded 10 rebounds on the night which is a season high.
The Dolphins will return to action when the calendar flips to 2016 where they will head to Brooklyn, NY to take on Brooklyn College at the West Quad Center for a CUNYAC clash.
