The College of Staten Island men’s and women’s basketball teams will pick up the action this week on Wednesday, and are off to a nice start to the week as Will Fonseca and Rosa Perone took home weekly awards. Fonseca earned the CUNYAC Player of the Week honor, while Perone earned Rookie of the Week on the women’s hardwood. Both turned in solid weeks in limited action.
No stranger to laurels, Fonseca was the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, and enjoyed a sensational week as CSI went 1-1 in a pair of early-week games. First, in limited duty, Fonseca collected 23 points in 20 minutes against Kean University in a 72-40 win. He added 14 rebounds and spread out five assists as well. Two days later, despite a tough loss to Hunter College, Fonseca dropped in 33 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of play. He also added three assists and a blocked shot. For the season, Fonseca leads the CSI bunch with 23.2 points a game and 9.3 rebounds per entry, averaging 31 minutes per contest. He is also tied for the team edge in blocks and has the third highest assist total on the team.
The CSI women only had a 1-0 week, storming by Hunter on Wednesday of last week, but the freshman Perone was sensational. Limited by foul trouble, Perone only played in 9 minutes, but was 6-8 from the floor (75%), garnering 14 points and six rebounds with a block and steal. The total lifted her season per game averages to 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday night, when they host John Jay College at the Sports & Recreation Center. The women tip off at 5:30pm, while the men tip at 7:30pm.
