The College of Staten Island softball squad enjoyed a modest 2-0 week last week, but were rewarded handsomely with a trio of weekly honors by the City University of New York Athletic Conference, it was announced today. For the second consecutive week, senior Chyanne Gilliam took home Player of the Week honors, and she was joined by Rookie of the Week Antoinette Galbo and Pitcher of the Week Nicolette Trapani, each earning the honor for the first time this week.
Gilliam went 2-4 from the plate in the doubleheader, continuing her hot run at the dish. In the opener, she went 1-3, plating in a go-ahead run on a single and coming around to score what was the eventual game-winning run in a 4-2 win over Rutgers-Newark. In game two, a 5-0 win for the Dolphins, Gilliam was walked twice, and earned a three-RBI double that helped the Dolphins to four insurance runs in the game’s fifth inning.
For the season, Gilliam leads the Dolphins with a .375 average, but she is torrid as of late, batting .563 over the last six games. She leads the squad with three extra-base hits, four RBI, and has added a stolen bag.
Freshman Galbo had a terrific doubleheader this past Tuesday as well, posting a 3-7 mark at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Galbo also added in a sacrifice bunt in the opening game and had seven put outs and five assists in the field at the shortstop position. For the year, Galbo is batting .233 with a triple, three bases-on-balls and a team high three stolen bases.
Garnering a win to even her record to 2-2 this season, Trapani earned Pitcher of the Week honors. The sophomore registered a complete game shutout, striking out two while only allowing three hits in the 5-0 win over Rutgers-Newark last week. Trapani has a team-best 1.33 ERA this season, allowing 20 hits in 21 innings, sharing the team lead with 14 strikeouts.
