With the win the Dolphins improved to 10-6 overall and 8-0 in the CUNYAC while the Bulldogs fell to 3-14 and 1-7 in the CUNYAC. The Dolphins scored six more points than their season average in this afternoon’s game which helped them pick up the win over the Bulldogs.
The first half of tonight’s game was a back-and-forth battle which saw the Dolphins come out on top 40-33 heading into the locker room. Senior guard Frank Schettino tallied another double-double this afternoon with a team high 17 points as well as 15 assists. Schettino shot 40% (6-15) from the floor tonight, while cashing in five of his eight free throws.
Junior forward Edin Bracic would add 16 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc as he shot 57% (4-7) from downtown. Bracic also tallied four rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the win. Senior forward Khaleeq Baum would earn his fourth double-double of the season with an 11 point, 10 rebound performance.
Staten Island dominated Brooklyn in the paint this afternoon, outscoring them 40-22 in the paint. The Dolphins are 9-2 when they outrebound their opponents this season and they did just that tonight, edging out the Bulldogs 38-35. The Dolphins also bested the Bulldogs 10-3 in fast break points.
The Dolphins were unable to gain control of the game until the 12 minute mark where Bracic sank a three-point basket to break the tie and give CSI a three-point lead. Bracic would then hit another long range three to put the Dolphins up six, a lead the Dolphins would never surrender the rest of the game.
Stephen Flagg found an open lane and was able to drive to the hoop and lay one in to put the Dolphins up 10 over their rivals from Brooklyn. Newcomer Darryl Bryant was inserted into the game with six minutes to go in the first half and made a quick impact. Bryant drained his first shot of the game before missing his next two.
Kevon Murphy gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the half (13 points) when Schettino fed him inside for an easy layup. The Bulldogs would chip away at that lead to make it a five point deficit after a made basket by Nathan Josaphat.
The Dolphins would open the second half on a 10-0 run to increase their lead over the Bulldogs to 19. Chris McIllhatton would not let his Bulldogs fall behind much longer. McIllhatton poured in a game high 29 points in the loss as he was able to sink five three pointers in the game.
A late technical foul gave the Bulldogs two free throws which they converted on to shrink the lead to just three. The Bulldogs would then allow the Dolphins to go on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to eight. Vincent Dacunto would put the Dolphins up seven after Brooklyn was able to bring it within four.
Free throws by Schettino and Murphy at the end of the game would seal the deal for the Dolphins to keep them unbeaten in the CUNYAC.
