College of Staten Island senior hoops star Frank Schettino had a banner year, and on the heels of an All-District and All-America citation from the NABC, he is now a 1st-team NCAA Division III All-America from Hero Sports , the college sports news website. A two-time nominee for the website’s NCAA Division III Hero of the Week award, Schettino had exclusive company as one of only five first-teamers named, and was the only metro player awarded on the three-team list.
“I’m very thankful to get such a high honor,” said Schettino, who recently starred at the NABC All-Star Game in Salem, VA, this weekend. “After playing in that game and realizing just how good many of these fellow All-Americans are, to see my name mentioned among them is really something special. I’m very blessed to go out with such a big bang.”
The news outlet was quick to point out Schettino’s incomparable statistics, noting “Schettino had five triple-doubles this season (most in D3) and finished second in the nation in assists with 258 in 28 games (9.2 per game). The CUNYAC Player of the Year, Schettino had a 17-assist game this year (in which he also scored 18 and had 12 rebounds), and while dishing out all those assists, somehow still averaged a team-high 18 points game. He also led the Dolphins in steals with 73 on the season.”
Schettino and the Dolphins finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 21-7 overall record, a mark that included an unblemished 16-0 regular season mark within the CUNYAC complete with another two wins as part of the postseason championship tournament, as the Dolphins picked up their 14th championship overall and made an appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
