As you return to CSI over the next week, many of you will find that vehicle traffic on campus may be challenging as a result of the Loop Road construction and the temporary loss of parking spaces. As we work through the Loop Road construction, we will do our best to preserve as many parking locations as possible throughout our work. During this first phase, we wanted to bring to your attention that three parking lots on the south and east sides of campus will be unavailable for several more weeks. Approximately 300 parking spaces will be unavailable until this phase of the construction is completed.
The first two parking areas that are not available are referred to as the gravel lot and the auxiliary lot, which are located along the stretch of road across from buildings 1N and 1S . Both areas are currently being paved as part of the straightening of Loop Road. The third unavailable parking area is the gravel lot between 6S and 4S. Please refer to the online campus map, which shows the location of these parking lots in addition to current road closures. As a reminder, gate “A,” located between parking lot #4 and building 5N, will be open Monday through Friday from 4:00pm to 9:00pm as an exit-only option.
When traveling to campus, we urge you to be cognizant of shifting traffic patterns, arrive early, allow extra time for travel both to and from the campus, and consider public transportation and carpooling options where available. We will be sure to provide an update as we get closer to these parking spaces becoming available again.
Ultimately, this project will be a great benefit to the campus community. Although logistical problems presented by coordinating services with CUNY, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), and the assigned contractor prevented us from starting the project in June as we had hoped, by working with the contractor, we have been able to significantly shorten the initial projected 18-month timeframe. We now anticipate that most of the work will be completed by the end of 2017, weather permitting. Once completed, Loop Road will be properly graded, with new curbs and gutters, a new storm drainage system, and will be pothole free.
