The College of Staten Island men’s basketball team is doing its part to aid in the ongoing hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, as they will be holding a Hurricane Relief Exhibition Contest at the Sports & Recreation Center tomorrow, with all proceeds generated to support the relief efforts through Americares, Inc. The exhibition contest will feature the 2017-18 Dolphins taking on a collection of recent CSI Men’s Basketball Alumni, with tip-off scheduled for 4:00pm. Admission for all to enter will be $2, but fans are asked to contribute as much as they can with 100% of the proceeds donated to our friends in need.
The 2017-18 Dolphins officially get their season started next week on the road against Yeshiva, so tomorrow will be one of their final tune-ups before the debuts for the first time under Head Coach T.J. Tibbs. CSI Assistant Coach J.C. Albano will serve as coach for the Alumni squad. The Exhibition is part of a global campaign put forth by the NCAA, allowing schools to conduct a scrimmage of this sport specifically for the relief effort. Recent Alumni that have committed to the event are: Will Fonseca, Kevin Swanberg, Dale Taranto, Bloochy Magloire, Khaleeq Baum, Frank Schettino, Michael Tate, Matt Van Manen, Kurt Manesy, Vincent Dacunto, and Jordan Young.
“We recognized that a lot of Division I schools were making this a part of their preseason and we wanted to get involved,” said Tibbs. “Having the alumni be a part of an exhibition rather than an outside team makes it more of a family environment and better for our program. The circumstances in Puerto Rico have affected our student-athletes and our diverse campus and it’s encouraging to know that we can help be a part of the relief effort.”
Alumni that may be interested in playing in the event can call Coach Tibbs at (718) 982-3166. For more information on the relief effort spearheaded by Americares, be sure to visit their website HERE.
