The College of Staten Island women’s basketball squad won for the sixth-straight time to open the season in the CUNYAC, rolling by Medgar Evers College, 92-41, at Cougars Cave in Brooklyn earlier this evening.  CSI improved to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while the Cougars fell to 0-13, 0-5, respectively.

It was a rough go from start to finish for the home side, as CSI broke up an early 4-4 stalemate with a 13-0 run to race out to an early, 17-4, lead just five minutes in.  Victoria Crea and Christina Pasaturo sparked the opening with a pair of baskets, while fellow senior Samantha Flecker drained a three as well.  CSI would finish with a commanding 28-13 edge at the end of the first stanza.

CSI would parlay a good start with a phenomenal second quarter, out-scoring the Cougars, 39-6, in the frame and taking a collosal 67-19 lead into intermission.  CSI shot over 50% in the frame, and took 36 more shots in the frame thanks to a numbing 32-9 edge in turnovers forced.  The stanza started with a 16-0 run, with Pasaturo dumping in seven points with Flecker and sophomore Diana Todaro putting in a pair of lay-ups each.  CSI would later close on a 19-2 run, with Daniela Zipolo putting in a trio of scores in the run

The Dolphins would continue to roll in the second half.  Rosa Perone would hit a transition lay-up to get CSI’s lead to as many as 58 in the third quarter, before two Cyndi White lay-ups moved the score to 83-30 after three periods.

With CSI reserves getting plenty of floor time, MEC won the final stanza by an 11-9 count, knocking the lead down to 92-41 by the end.

Pasaturo scored 23 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 26 points to go with seven rebounds.  Flecker topped all Dolphins with 11 rebounds and 11 points to go with four assists while Todaro topped out with 12 points.  MEC was led by White’s 17 points and seven rebounds.  CSI would tally 43 takeaways and collected 25 steals in the win, finishing with 42 more shots taken.

Next up for CSI is a date with Hunter College this weekend on Saturday, January 13, at 1pm, to continue conference play.
