The City University of New York Athletic Conference released their first set of weekly awards this week for baseball, and at the head of that list was a pair of Dolphins. Senior Nicholas Meola was named the conference’s Player of the Week, while freshman hurler John Esposito was named the CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week.
Although the Dolphins wrapped up a six-game swing in Myrtle Beach from Saturday through Monday, it was CSI’s first three games on their trip that counted towards the weekly awards. For Meola, he went 5-for-9 at the dish in a trio of games. He hit safely in each game, and scattered four RBI, including a two-run double in CSI’s 3-2 win over Fredonia. Through CSI’s first five games so far, Meola is batting a robust .467, with a team-best seven RBI and three doubles so far this season.
CSI’s first win of the season, the 3-2 winner of Fredonia, was earned by freshman Esposito, who went six sterling innings, allowing only one earned run, striking out five batters in the process. So far this season, he is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA.
The Dolphins went 3-2 on their tear through South Carolina, seeing one of their games rained out. CSI will next be in action, weather permitting, on Saturday, when they host Manhattanville College at 12 Noon at the CSI Baseball Complex.
