Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island men’s tennis team made short work of Lehman College today, storming to a 9-0 win at the CSI Tennis Center in a game that kept CSI’s perfect run through the CUNYAC alive. CSI, now owners of an eight-match win streak, improved to 8-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the CUNYAC, while the Lightning fell to 1-9, 1-5, respectively.
Play started with Doubles, as CSI was up to the task, winning their matches with speed and efficiency. The first to come off of the court was the No. 3 pairing of Lesly DeCastro and Matthew Kotlyar, as they powered to an 8-0 finish over LC’s Hugo Barrera and Anton Kyrylenko. A few minutes late thanks to some longer volleys, it was the CSI pair of Matthew Vesci and Tao Lin striking down Lehman’s Ioannis Vasos and Thamid Ahmed, 8-0. The Lightning’s Chris Mulholland and Miguel Haboosh managed to stay involved with the CSI team of Ivi Selenica and Alex Tsui, but in the end, CSI finished strong en route to an 8-2 win, giving CSI the 3-0 lead after the Doubles play.
In Singles, CSI played with a modified lineup with Vesci playing his third match of the season at No. 1, defeating Mulholland, 6-0, 6-0. One notch lower, Selenica was able to pull away from Haboosh, 6-0, 6-2. Alex Tsui played one spot up at No. 3, powering to a 6-0, 6-1, win over Vasos, while Kotlyar was occupying the No. 4 spot, besting Kyrylenko by the same exact score. Lesly DeCastro and Tao Lin win at the Nos. 5-6 flights by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Lehman finalized their CUNYAC slate of games, but CSI has one more to go and it will be against Baruch College at 12:30pm on Friday at the CSI Tennis Center. The match will determine the 2019 Regular Season Champions and the owners of the No. 1 seed going into the CUNYAC Tournament which begins next week.
