Now that the spring semester has ended, and we have started our summer break, I suspect you are contemplating what is next on your summer reading list. Thanks to the generosity of our CSI Library, we have the perfect beach read for you–Dr. Joseph E. Aoun’s, Robot-Proof: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. Although published in 2017, before large language models such as ChatGPT came to the forefront, Dr. Aoun’s arguments on how to prepare our students for the technological future are still applicable. He lays the foundation for a new discipline, “humanics,” and argues that in addition to the “old” literacies of reading, writing, and mathematics, students also need to learn the “new” literacies: data literacy, technological literacy, and human literacy.
I will be mediating a workshop in August where we can discuss how we can be proactive educators, given the challenges these new technologies bring to higher education. How can we incorporate the new literacies into our courses and overarching curriculum?
Special thanks go out to the CSI Library for upgrading access to the eBook from single access to unlimited access for members of the CSI community.
Happy summer reading.
