Oswaldo Zavala, Professor of Latin American Literature and Culture at the College of Staten Island and The Graduate Center, CUNY, was quoted extensively in an article in Courthouse News Service about Mexican drug cartels being classified as terrorists by the Trump administration.

In the article, Zavala notes that “”narco-terrorism is the concept of a hostile enemy that must be defeated,” adding further to the militarization of the border. Noting that this has been a bipartisan effort over the years, Zavala states that this approach to the cartels has been part of the U.S. approach to state security since the second half of the 20th Century.
