The College of Staten Island (CSI) Innovation Hub is proud to announce the appointment of Luis Martinez as its new Director. A distinguished leader in entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic development, Martinez brings a dynamic vision and extensive expertise in building inclusive business ecosystems, supporting early-stage founders, and driving strategic growth initiatives.
Martinez joins the CSI Innovation Hub with a proven track record in startup acceleration, venture development, and ecosystem building. As the Founder of We Tha Plug, he has cultivated a global community of more than 10,000 entrepreneurs, providing access to mentorship, capital, and tailored programming to support early-stage Pan-African and Latinx founders. His leadership extends to the national stage, where he played a pivotal role in launching the Black Innovation Alliance (BIA) – a coalition of 175 organizations dedicated to closing the racial wealth gap by ensuring equitable access to entrepreneurial resources and funding opportunities.
“Luis Martinez’s appointment marks a transformative moment for the CSI Innovation Hub,” said Jasmine Cardona, Executive Director, Division of Economic Development and Community Partnerships. “His extensive entrepreneurial experience and innovative vision will propel us toward a future where diverse startups thrive, fostering inclusive economic growth. Together, we are dedicated to building a dynamic ecosystem that not only supports emerging entrepreneurs but also strengthens our entire community.”
Martinez’s career spans government, business, and startup ecosystems, with key roles at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Startup Grind, where he leveraged his expertise to support entrepreneurship, business integrity, and economic development. His passion for innovation also led him to serve as Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurial Programs at the Better Business Bureau, where he spearheaded initiatives to support businesses of all sizes and partnered with GoDaddy to launch the Empower by GoDaddy Main St Accelerator.
In addition, Martinez has worked at the intersection of national security, technology, and startups, serving as a University Director (Innovation) for the San Diego Region within the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN). He has also held key advisory roles with organizations such as The Center for Respectful Leadership and the SXSW Pitch Advisory Board, where he continues to advocate for inclusive innovation, economic equity, and technology-driven growth.
“I am honored to lead the CSI Innovation Hub at such a pivotal time for entrepreneurship and economic development,” said Martinez. “By strengthening partnerships, expanding access to resources, and fostering a culture of innovation, we will unlock new opportunities for startups, small businesses, and the broader community.”
The CSI Innovation Hub remains dedicated to supporting business growth, driving technological advancements, and ensuring that all entrepreneurs—regardless of background—have the tools and networks they need to succeed. Martinez’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the Hub, reinforcing its mission to be a catalyst for economic and technological transformation.
