The Library invites you to apply to participate in the completely digital, self-led, asynchronous course on Open Access Scholarship

Deadline to apply: Sunday, Apr. 6, 2025.

Open Access Scholarship is removing barriers to scholarly resources by promoting freely available research within the academic community and beyond. To learn more about open access publishing and its impact, apply to participate in the Library’s digital Crash Course on Open Access – ideal for faculty who are unfamiliar with open access or seeking to improve their knowledge and understanding of open publishing.

By the end of this crash course, learners should be able to:

  1. Define and understand Open Access
  2. Differentiate between various types of OA journals (Green, Gold, Hybrid, Diamond, Bronze)
  3. Understand the process of publishing their work in OA journals and/or institutional repositories, such as CUNY academic works
  4. Recognize the distinction between repositories and academic social media platforms (ResearchGate, Academia.edu)
  5. Locate and share OA resources
  6. Better understand the evolving role of AI within open publishing
  7. Understand APCs (article processing charges)

This self-guided course includes text-based material, videos, and interactive tutorials. At the end of the course, there is one required deliverable in the form of a submission to CUNY Academic Works (CUNY’S open access institutional repository) or a brief written response. Faculty who successfully complete the course by the deadline and submit the required deliverable will receive a stipend of $750-$1,000 each, dependent on cohort size, as part of the CUNY OER grant.

To apply:

Please submit the application form by Apr. 6 online.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance into the course by Thursday, Apr. 10, and the course will be available from Friday, Apr. 11 through Friday, Apr. 25.

Duration: The course is asynchronous, but is designed to be completed over the course of one to two weeks. The entire course takes approximately five to seven hours to complete, depending on individual pace.
