In early-May, the Center for Global Engagement’s English Language Institute held “Culture Day” in the Center for the Arts. The event involved students presenting aspects of their home countries that provide insight into their cultures.

ELI professors, native New Yorkers, also shared unique characteristics of our city’s culture. After delivering their well-practiced presentations, the students’ broke bread together in a multicultural potluck. Plates were piled high with cuisine from China, Japan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Russia, Vietnam, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Italy, Dominican Republic, Albania, and the Ivory Coast. Inspiring both pride and curiosity, this exchange enriched all who participated.

ELI Director Christian Perticone noted during his opening remarks that this event allows students to build skills and confidence in their new language. “Even if your English isn’t perfect,” he said, “the fact that you’re standing in front of people talking about something you prepared is a big milestone.” To see some of the students in action, watch excerpts from their presentations in a recap of the day here: English Language Institute Culture Day Spring 2025
