Three Dolphins headlined the weekly conference awards along with four others earning honorable mentions. Women’s Soccer earned both Player and Rookie of the Week as Demi-Jean Martorano earned her fourth straight win and Melissa Gelardi earned her second honor of the season at Rookie. Alfonso Casteneda was awarded Rookie of the Week men’s soccer. For honorable mention’s both women’s tennis players were awarded, Faith Avevor and Ilona Stoyko, Dong Luu of men’s soccer and Monica Concepcion of volleyball.
With the only player to own the women’s soccer Player of the Week title this season, Martorano, continues to help the Dolphins. She scored two goals in Wednesday’s 7-0 victory over Mount St. Vincent before knocking in the winning goal on Saturday’s 1-0 win over CCNY. She currently leads the conference in goals with a total of 10 averaging 1.67 per game.
Gelardi earned her second Rookie award garnering three assists in total for the week. She assisted Natalie Tombasco and Samantha Wysokowski’s goals in the MSV win and was also the corner kick assist behind Martorano’s game winning goal vs. CCNY. She also leads the conference with seven assists, averaging1.17 per game.
Castaneda scored two goals in Saturday’s 7-1 victory over CCNY. He totaled four shots, all on-goal, while also assisting Dogan Altunsoy’s second half goal. The Susan Wagenr product is giving the Dolphins a lot of opportunities leading with 25 attempted shots for the season.
After sitting the first few games due to injury Luu wasted no time once he got back on the field. The sophomore had the Dolphins winning goal in his first game back against York College. In Saturday’s victory he assisted Orsi Bermudez-Reyes’s goal with a corner kick.
Stoyko earned her second consecutive honorable mention for women’s tennis with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles in Thursday’s win against Medgar Evers. Her and Alena Vedeneeva took an 8-1 win in No.1 singles as well. The sophomore has a 4-1 singles record and a 5-1 doubles record for the season.
With a rookie honorable mention, Avevor swept all her opponents in the Medgar Evers match. In No. 4 singles she took a 6-0-,6-0 win followed by an 8-0 victory in doubles with teammate Maryna Incherchera.
Despite the two losses this week, Concepcion of women’s volleyball, showed effort. She totaled nine digs against Baruch College while totaling 12 digs and ten kills against Yeshiva.
Catch all the Dolphins in action this weekend in CSI’s first ever Homecoming event. Women’s tennis will play at 9:00am, men’s soccer at 10:00am, volleyball at 12:00 pm and women’s soccer at 2:00 pm. All games will serve as breast Cancer Awareness and help raise funds for the Staten Island Breast Cancer research Initiative.
