The Gallery of the College of Staten Island is pleased to announce the opening of the first show for the Spring semester: Y Más Na’: The Works of José Camacho. The exhibition of this extraordinary artist’s work will open on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and run until Saturday, Mar. 16.
The exhibition shows the work of the Puerto Rican American artist José Camacho, who is based in Montclair, NJ. His evocative works combine words and images to eloquently express his complex political, personal, and artistic identities. The exhibition includes both paintings and prints with themes drawn from Camacho’s heritage. They are particularly rich in their layered allusions to the religious and political beliefs popular in contemporary Puerto Rico. These tropes are explored through such charged monuments as massive cemeteries and idioms of colloquial language. In a group of works, the minimalist outline map of Puerto Rico becomes a powerful expressive form of nationalist myths and realities for Camacho.
