Alan I. Benimoff: Lecturer-Doctoral Schedule, Engineering Science and Physics Member, Alumni Association Board of Directors Much has changed since Alan Benimoff ’67 attended Staten Island Community College (SICC) from 1964 to 1967 at the St. George campus, but commuting was still a difficult task. “When I started at SICC in the fall of 1964,” he recalls, “the Verrazano Bridge had not yet opened. I commuted to and from SICC from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn by taking three busses and then the Brooklyn Ferry.” When the bridge finally opened two months later, his commute was still a threepart endeavor going from “the Brighton Beach Line to Whitehall Street and taking the Staten Island Ferry.” Nonetheless, Benimoff persevered to earn his AS in Engineering Science at SICC and lay the foundation for a successful and impactful academic career in geology at CSI. Thinking back on the best aspect of his SICC education, Benimoff points to the excellent level of instruction. “The education I received was high quality. It prepared me for the future. The mentoring by faculty was outstanding.” When asked for a fondest memory, he states that he enjoyed “the whole SICC experience.” He does, however, remember some of his favorite places at SICC. One was the student lounge at 50 Bay Street, which “allowed us a place where we were able to meet other students.” In addition, he adds “we ate lunch in the St. George Clipper restaurant.” Another spot was “Dolphin House, which was located on Avenue J in Brooklyn.
