The College of Staten Island women’s volleyball squad dropped their second-straight CUNYAC contest this evening, falling in straight sets to John Jay College as part of conference play in Manhattan. The Bloodhounds took the match by scores of 25-21, 26-24, and 25-20.
In the opener, the Dolphins fell into a hold early, 4-1, but responded with a 9-0 run to take a 10-4 lead, led by a pair of Vanessa Reyes kills. CSI kept the buffer up 17-11, but JJC would battle back and would use a 6-0 run to pull ahead, 21-19, powered by a two Jeanette Luna kills. From there, JJC would close it out, 25-21.
The second set featured three lead changed and 10 ties. A comeback by the Dolphins down 23-17, got the score eventually even at 24-24, but back-to-back kills by Nyla Lloyd-Clarke and Rachel Eng sealed it for the Bloodhounds.
In the third frame, again JJC went up big early, 6-1, but a kill by Angelica Paulino got CSI tied at 7-7. Five straight points scored by JJC put them back up and kept CSI relatively at bay the rest of the match.
Leading the way for JJC was Eng and Lloyd-Clark with 10 kills each while Eng added six aces and 16 digs, both team highs. CSI got five kills from Paulino, and four aces from Cassidy Iannariello. Victoria Wong led defensively with 14 digs.
CSI returns to action this weekend, when they take on Immaculata University and Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, on Saturday.
