On November 11, 1918, “on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” an armistice agreement was signed marking the end of hostilities in the First World War, after millions of soldiers died in combat and millions more were wounded. Thereafter, November 11th was declared Armistice Day in which world peace was celebrated and veterans of World War I were honored. Armistice Day was declared a federal holiday in 1938.
In 1954, after the U.S. Armed Forces fought in World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day, to honor all who served in the U.S. military.
Veterans Day is a time to say thank you to those who bravely served, or continue to serve, our country. Their sacrifices should not go unnoticed or be taken for granted. Those who serve risk their lives to maintain the security of our nation and the freedom we hold so dear.
I want to personally thank all of our students, staff, and faculty who served, or continue to serve, in our Armed Forces. We are grateful for your service, honor your sacrifice, and celebrate your patriotism.
