Miguel Aragón was in the planning stages of a collaborative art project with his mother, a skilled maker of crochet work, when she suddenly died. Left with a vast collection of her decorative doilies—tactile abstractions of the hours of repetitive, meditative labor—he picked up the conversational thread as an act of mourning. His mother’s handwork, and other objects that she collected, figure centrally in the prints and animation works he has produced in the past four years. Traveling to artists residencies in Scotland, Germany, Italy, several states in the U.S. and elsewhere with his mother’s precious handiwork, Aragon has linked these intimate objects with other craft traditions. The Art Gallery of the College of Staten Island proudly presents the first comprehensive exhibition of their unfinished conversations.

The catalog features essays by Dr. Katie Cumiskey (Psychology) and Yael Friedman (independent critic).
