Faculty and staff from the College of Staten Island returned to Notre Dame Academy High School on January 29, 2026, for the third annual Master Class Day, an immersive academic experience designed to introduce students to college-level study and real-world career pathways.
Building on the success of previous years, the day offered NDA juniors and seniors the opportunity to engage directly with CSI faculty across a range of disciplines, from the sciences and international studies to law, education, and healthcare. The program reflects a continued partnership between the two institutions and a shared commitment to preparing students for the academic rigor and possibilities that await them beyond high school.
“We’re thrilled with the dedication shown by the CSI team and the NDA administration toward this important initiative,” said Emmanuel Esperance, Jr., Director of Recruitment and Admissions at CSI, who organizes the event each year with Sean Walsh, Assistant Director for Orientation. “Together, we’ve helped create a bridge that connects students to the world of college and career exploration. You could feel the spark—this experience truly ignited new ideas in their minds.”
The day began with a special interdisciplinary master class for NDA seniors, led by renowned physicist and astronomer Dr. Charles Liu. Held in the school’s chapel, the session blended physics and astronomy to spark curiosity and critical thinking, offering students a glimpse into how scientific inquiry connects classroom theory to the wider universe.

During the following period, NDA juniors participated in a series of concurrent master classes taught by CSI faculty members, each aligned with a distinct field of study:
- International Studies, led by Dr. Stephen Ferst, explored global systems and cross-cultural perspectives.
- Physical Therapy, presented by Dr. Amanda Rotondo, introduced students to the science of movement, rehabilitation, and patient care.
- Education, taught by Dr. Walt Stepnowski, examined teaching as both a profession and a calling.
- Legal Studies/Pre-Law, with Dr. Michael Paris, provided insight into legal frameworks, advocacy, and civic responsibility.
- Earth and Environmental Science, led by Dr. Jane Alexander, focused on environmental systems and the urgent challenges facing the planet.
Each session was designed to mirror a college classroom experience, encouraging discussion, inquiry, and engagement while giving students a practical sense of academic life at the postsecondary level.
The event was coordinated in collaboration with NDA leadership, including Beatrice Alecci, High School Assistant Principal for Student Life, whose support helped ensure a seamless and impactful experience for both students and visiting faculty.
Master Class Day continues to serve as a meaningful bridge between secondary and higher education, reinforcing CSI’s role as an engaged community partner and NDA’s commitment to expanding academic horizons for its students. As the program grows year over year, it remains a powerful example of how collaboration can inspire students to envision and prepare for their future paths.
