Program will also celebrate long-awaiting Alumni Game on October 3
The College of Staten Island men’s soccer team made program history last week when the Dolphins toppled nationally-ranked and CUNY-rivals No. 16 Queens College on the road, 2-0. After a scoreless first half that saw the Knights control much of the offensive pressure, the Dolphins came alive in the second half behind two goals from Dylan Meadows. The win also marked CSI’s first-ever Division II victory over Queens College and its first-ever Division II win over a nationally ranked opponent.
Things looked dire for the Dolphins as Queens controlled play in the game and earned a penalty kick in the game’s 73rd minute. But Queens would miss the shot, a turning point in the game, and the Dolphins quickly turned the momentum in their favor. CSI controlled possession along the far left side of the field, with Meadows, Deniz Karcher, and Yair Roman connecting on a series of quick touches. Roman eventually found Meadows, who put the ball into the back of the net to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute.
Meadows would then take advantage of a late turnover in the 88th minute and raced from one end of the field while working around a Queens defender before finding the bottom-right corner of the net to give CSI a 2-0 lead that secured the victory.
The win could not have come at a better time, as CSI will be welcoming in and celebrating its alumni on Saturday, October 2, following its game against fellow ECC-rivals Daemen University, complete with an Alumni Game that will feature Dolphins spanning six decades of Divisions III & II immediately following the game.
