College of Staten Island men’s basketball extended their conference record to 2-0 last night with a 77-70 victory over Medgar Evers. CSI raised their overall record to 7-3 while Medgar Evers fell to a 3-9 overall and 1-1 CUNYAC record.
 
The Dolphins started on a 6-0 run that would continue throughout the half. They were able to extend the lead to a first half high of 8 points on three occasions while allowing the Cougars to close the gap as close as two 10 minutes in. Behind Jordan Young’s 14 points (7-for-9 from the field) the Dolphins completed the first half with a score of 39-31.
 
A 6-1 run behind two made lay-ups by Jovan Deare put the Cougars within two points just three minutes into play. The Dolphins continued with a lead with Medgar Evers right behind. By 4:31 the Dolphins had extended their lead to 11 points, their highest of the game. The Cougars wouldn’t back down taking an 8-1 run to put the score within four points with 2:31 remaining. After Young fouled out with 1:30 remaining, CSI tallied six made free throws to close up with a win.
 
Young led with 18 points shooting 8-for-11 from the field. Dale Taranto added 14 points, 8 rebounds, three assists and three steals. David Hughes and Bloochy Magliore added 14 points apiece. T.J. Tibbs totaled 8 points with five assists and four steals.
 
Jovan Deare totaled 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Cougars while James Gilmore added 13 points.
 
The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday following the CSI women’s game. The men will play Brooklyn College in a 3:00 pm contest.
