The College of Staten Island women’s tennis team made it four straight wins on Monday afternoon, toppling visiting St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn by a 9-0 count as part of non-league play at the CSI Tennis Center.  CSI extends to 5-2 overall on the season while the Bears fell to 0-2.
The match was never much in doubt as the home Dolphins dropped just seven total games in the match over the nine sets that were played.  CSI got things started with an overpowering performance in doubles, staking themselves to a 3-0 advantage.  At the top spot, the team of Gabriella Villarruel and Ilona Stoyko did not surrender a game, winning 8-0 over the SJC team of Christine Parker and Elisabeth Stein.  The same was true for the second doubles team of Nancy Almazo and Qing Li, as the duo scored an 8-0 winner as well over Kristen Bauman and Shamika Thomas.
CSI had a new look in third doubles.  Making her debut fresh off of the soccer pitch, New Dorp High School’s Demi-Jean Martorano, who doubles on the women’s soccer team, teamed up with Justine Kuna to strike down an 8-2 winner.
When play turned to singles, the Dolphins were equally dominant.  Martorano made her debut special by posting a 10-0 win at the No. 6 spot over Leah Hampton.  Meanwhile Kuna at No. 5 and Li at No. 3 won by identical shutout scores.  CSI surrendered just five games over the other three pro-sets to take the one-sided match.
CSI has now won four straight games and have not lost a match since a gritty 5-4 loss to William Paterson back on September 11.  Next up, CSI will resume CUNYAC play, when they face NYC College of Technology.  The game will be played on Thursday at 3:30pm at York College in Jamaica, NY.  CSI is 3-0 in CUNYAC play this season.
