The College of Staten Island’s women’s volleyball team picked up their first win and their first lose in CUNYAC this afternoon during this seasons first CUNYAC tri-match at Baruch College. At day’s end the Dolphins are now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the CUNYAC.
The first match-up featured the Dolphins taking on Lehman College that took four sets to complete; Lehman won the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-12, respectively. The Dolphins battled back to steal game three by a 25-19 margin, but the Lighting started out strong in game four to take the final victory 25-17.
The second match-up saw the Dolphins take on John Jay College which also took four games to complete; the Bloodhounds took set one with a score of 25-14 and looked to be in control. The Dolphins had other plans as they edged the Bloodhounds with a 25-22 game two win and didn’t look back. The Dolphins went on to seize games three and four by a score of 25-14 in both games.
The first match-up was highlighted by CSI’s Maricor Socorro-Calleja and Vasiliki Stergioula whom had seven kills and eight serving aces in total. Lehman’s Gerri-Ann Martin tallied 10 kills while her teammate Jennifer Winkler compiled seven kills of her own.
In the second game, Pola Poskrobko added five kills and four serving aces. Teammates Stergioula and Danielle Ponsiglione delivered three more serving aces each and Socorro-Calleja boasted eight kills. The Bloodhound’s Renauta Sailsman racked up 11 kills but in a losing effort.
The Dolphins next game will be Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at home in the Sports and Recreation Center.
