The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team won for the second straight time, defeating Medgar Evers College, 61-33, as part of CUNYAC play in Brooklyn, New York.  The Dolphins improved to 9-11 overall and 6-4 in conference play, while MEC fell to 2-21, 0-11, respectively.

In a sloppy first half, the teams combined for 38 turnovers, with CSI taking a 30-20 lead into intermission.  The Dolphins grabbed their first lead on a Nikki Fabozzi layup with 15:11 to go, 7-5, and never trailed again, leading by as many as 11 points, while the Cougars knocked back the lead to as few as six.

In the second half, however, the game was seized by the Dolphins, as the visitors used a 15-2 run to start the frame to cushion a big lead.  In the process, MEC had all sorts of trouble protecting the basketball, as CSI forced another 26 turnovers in the second half, which amounted to 51 overall for the Cougars, who only ended up attempting 31 shots in the game.

CSI’s Olivia Tierno turned in a great performance, posting 24 points, 3 rebounds and a game-high 7 assists.  Katelyn Hepworth finished with 15 points and six assists while foul-troubled Fabozzi finalized with 11.  Medgar was led by Chantal Biscette 20 points.

CSI was out-rebounded 40-33, but the +34 turnover advantage was the major difference.

The Dolphins will next travel to face Brooklyn College on Friday evening at 5pm.
