The College of Staten Island men’s basketball team defeated Hunter College, 74-58, in a CUNY conference match-up this afternoon at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center. The Dolphins improved to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the CUNYAC, while The Hawks dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in the CUNYAC.
Prior to the start of the game, the CSI Matty White Alumni Game was played in honor of the late great coach of CSI, Matty White. Teams were split into Maroon colored jerseys and Gray colored jerseys. For nearly the entire game the Gray team had the lead and even went up by as many as 23 points. However, the Maroon team came storming back to take a lead and eventually came out with the win, 68-65.
As for the College of Staten Island men’s basketball team, it was a game of runs in the first half. The Dolphins jumped out to a 20-8 lead powered by a three point field goal by Jonathan Chadwick-Myers and a lay-up from Javon Cox. The Hawks came right back with a quick 10-0 run cutting the Dolphins lead to, 20-18 with 7:20 reaming in the first half. Bloochy Magloire wasted no time and answer back on the next possession with a three pointer to end the Hawks run. The Dolphins would end the half on a 21-3 run and go into the locker room with a 41-21 lead.
The Dolphins shot 15-39 (39%) from the field, including 4-8 (50%) from three, while the Hawks shot 8-30 (27%), and only 1-8 from three. Magloire led all scorers with 10 points and Cox tallied nine points and eight rebounds. Brian Kruger had five points to lead the Hawks.
The game became much more competitive as both teams traded baskets for most of the second half. The Dolphins would extend their lead to as many as 24 points, 61-37, on a Chadwick-Myers lay-up with 6:31 remaining. The Hawks would only get as close as 13 points, 67-54, on a three point ball by Matthew Hunter. However, only 94 seconds remained in the game and the Dolphins would seal it with free throws made by Magloire. The final score was, 74-58.
CSI was led by Magloire’s 18 points, Cox’s 14 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Chadwick-Myers chipped in with 12 points and six assists. The Hawks leading scorer was Lester Anim who posted 13 points and nine rebounds.
CSI’s will next hit the road for a non-conference match-up against Kean University on January 21, 2013 for a 12:00 PM matinee on Martin Luther King Jr Day.
