The College of Staten Island men’s and women’s cross-country squads turned in impressive performances this past weekend and were rewarded handsomely by the City University of New York Athletic Conference with a pair of weekly citations. Freshman Andrew Scharf was awarded the conference’s Performer of the Week honor, while fellow frosh Victoria Crea was awarded Rookie of the week on the women’s side. CSI participated this week in the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Highlander Classic.
On the men’s side, Scharf was terrific in the meet’s 8k, coming in at 28:19; his second best time this season and the third best all season by a Dolphin. Scharf has two of the top three CSI times in the 8k this season, and his numbers continue to blossom. Scharf’s time this week placed him 39th overall in the field and first among all CUNYAC runners at the meet. His race time was also better than 10 of the 15 NCAA Division I runners who competed on the same course.
In the women’s 5k race, once again Crea was fantastic from wire-to-wire. Crea came in 79th overall and 4th amongst CUNYAC runners with a time of 22:37. It was the Dolphins’ third best faring in the 5k this season, and Crea’s second best performance in the 5k in 2014.
Both the men and women will be back in action, racing at Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday for the City College of New York Invitational. The women race at 10am, while the men will go off at 11am.
