The College of Staten Island men’s basketball squad enjoyed a 2-0 week last week, and ring in play this week with a CUNYAC and ECAC Division III Metro Player of the Week honor for Will Fonseca. No stranger to the weekly award circuit, Fonseca posted another banner week for the Dolphins, who have reached the home-stretch of their season.
Fonseca could not have started the week any better, posting a 39-point, 15-rebound performance against City College of New York. The junior added an assist, block, and a pair of steals. The 39 points were a career-high for Fonseca, and the 5th-highest single game total in CSI men’s basketball history, as CSI won the game, 83-70. Three days later, CSI bounced York College, 77-65, and Fonseca once again led all scorers, this time with 27 points to go with seven rebounds and a pair of assists and blocks.
For the season, Fonseca is averaging 25.7 points per game, the third-highest mark in NCAA Division III, and is second in the nation in rebounding, at 12.3 per contest. He also leads the squad with 40 blocks and is second on the squad with 45 assists and 35 steals.
CSI is next in action Tuesday night, when they visit Medgar Evers College, for an 8pm tip.
