The College of Staten Island men’s tennis team split a pair of matches a week ago, but for his individual effort on the courts, freshman Akaki Dundua has been selected as the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week. Dundua was a victor in all of his flights last week, and its the first weekly award of his career.
The Dolphins started with a tough 6-3 loss to Hunter last week, but Dundua shined. The freshman only played Singles, and outlasted HC’s Hamza Sadhra wby a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Three days later, Dundua was in the lineup for singles and doubles, and CSI defeated Rutgers-Camden on the road, 6-3. Dundua first paired with Tao Lin to record an 8-5 win at the No. 3 Doubles flight, and then in singles play, he overpowered Jake Collette-Nippins, 6-1, 6-3.
For the season, Dundua is 2-2 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play. CSi is 2-3 this season, and is next scheduled for a conference test against John Jay College on Thursday at 4pm at the CSI Tennis Center.
