A pair of College of Staten Island freshmen standouts are walking away with Rookie of the Week honors, bestowed to them by the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Teresa Maresca of the women’s volleyball team and Daniela Zirpolo of the women’s soccer bagged their first career honors thanks to big performances last week, and will look to add to the positive momentum with another busy slate of games this week as well.
Maresca shined in the three games she started last week on the hardwood. Steadily improving her numbers, she provides four kills in a win over York College and then doubled that to eight against Cedar Crest College on Saturday before posting a career-high 13 kills on 30 attempts in CSI’s final match of the week against St. Joseph’s College (BK). She also totaled 12 aces on the week including a career-high seven against York and scored eight digs to go with a total of five blocks (three solo).
For the year, Maresca is second on the team with 63 kills, and is the overall leader with a .199 attack percentage. She also leads the team with 23 service aces this season while standing second in total blocks with 10. Maresca and the women’s volleyball unit will next be in action on Thursday, October 5 on the road against the College of Saint Elizabeth at 7pm.
The CSI women’s soccer team ended a mini two-game skid with a big road win over Rosemont College this past weekend, and it was Zirpolo that played hero. The freshman scored with 12 minutes to go until halftime, her first career goal, and it would proe to be the game-winner in a 1-0 win. Zirpolo has appeared as a reserve in all 11 games this season, scattering six shots. The 42 minutes she logged in both of last week’s games for the Dolphins were her third highest outputs of the season.
Fresh off of her first goal and honor, Zirpolo and the team will be back in action on Tuesday, October 3, at 7pm on the road against FDU-Florham.
