The Center for Global Engagement is hosting a group of ten undergraduate students from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), UK from July 31 through August 11.

The group arrived on Monday at the College’s Dolphin Cove student housing. Upon arrival, they received a warm welcome from the Center’s Winnie Brophy and Yamin Inzali. Inzali then took them on a neighborhood walk to a local supermarket and, today, Brophy will give them an orientation.

This is the second group that arrived from LJMU to participate in the College of Staten Island’s summer program with the first group of 24 students having visited CSI in 2018. This year’s course is focused on “Sustainability in New York City.”

Nora Santiago is the lead instructor of this program. Topics that she’ll explore are “What Happens to Waste in NYC?” Sustainability Initiatives at the CSI,” and “Sustainable Transportation in NYC.”

Yesterday, Santiago informed them about CSI’s composing projects and sustainability practices (see the Photo Gallery), and will take them on a personal visit to the New York City Sanitation Department Transfer Station and a trip to SIMS Processing Recyclables for NYC Metro area. In addition, the students will take a tour of Fresh Kills Park.

Another highlight will be a personal tour of the United Nations Headquarters, which will include a seminar by Gerard Tuii Anapu, Office of the President of the General Assembly, where he will address the sustainable development goals of the UN. Students will also participate in volunteer work at the SNUG Harbor Cultural Center this weekend.
