Timur Shamuradov was lights-out against Lehman
The College of Staten Island men’s tennis squad made it a perfect five-for-five since returning from its Spring Break trip in Orlando, Florida, earlier this month, winning again this afternoon at the CSI Tennis Center by an 8-1 count over CUNYAC-rivals Lehman College. The Dolphins improved to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the CUNYAC, while the Lightning fell to 1-6, 0-2, respectively.
CSI’s only blemish was at No. 6 Singles, otherwise sweeping all the other flights in straight sets and in convincing fashion. Play opened with doubles, and CSI started strong. At the top spot, No. 1 team Nicholas Zikos and Hector Molina won 8-0, as did the No. 3 crew of Ed Ruffe and Daniel Ursomanno. Over at No. 2, the CSI duo of Timur Shamuradov and Kolachuk Chuenpratum, was the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, took out Lehman’s Gene Nakagoki and Ran Zhang, 8-5.
Straight-set wins then followed in singles play, leaving the match in little doubt. Zikos defeated LC’s Cesar Andrade, 6-2, 6-1, and one level lower, Molina took out Alex Linde, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 Shamuradov was outstanding in a 6-1, 6-0, winner over Zhang, and at No. 4 Chuenpratum stayed hot with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Nakagaki. At No. 5, Ruffe was crisp in a 6-0, 6-2, win over Marcos Coto-Batres.
Lehman took their only flight of the match at No. 6. There, Al Joseph Dubouzet defeated CSI’s Austin Kapetanakis in a marathon 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, match.
CSI will now remain idle until Wednesday, April 3, when they travel to face York College, at 4pm to continue CUNYAC play.
