The College of Staten Island men’s soccer team took to the pitch today on senior day with a chance to be crowned the CUNYAC regular season champions. The Dolphins took 19 shots but were unable to find the back of the net while Hunter took 14 shots and were also unable to find the back of the net despite having a man advantage over the Dolphins. With the 0-0 draw CSI moves to 8-8-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the CUNYAC while Hunter goes to 3-11-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the CUNYAC.
In a rain soaked turf in Staten Island, NY, both teams had trouble holding onto the ball as it skipped all around the turf. Senior captain Alfonso Castaneda would find himself with an early yellow card just 21 minutes into the first half.
The Dolphins scored off of a corner kick and as CSI celebrated the goal running back to their side of the field the referee disallowed the goal and called a foul which negated the goal and put the Dolphins back on the defensive side of the ball. CSI continued to fight hard while trying to find a way to find the back of the net in their last home regular season home game.
Devastation struck the Dolphins in the second half as Castaneda was given a second yellow and a red card which knocked him out of the game and forced CSI to play the rest of the game down a man. CSI did not give up, after a change in formation the Dolphins were ready for the long hall as this game would go into double overtime.
CSI continued to play as if they weren’t down a man as they still attacked the goal and had a few chances but were having trouble getting them on target.
Hunter had a chance to end the game and head home with a win in the first overtime as Brandon Fiscina dribbled down the left side of the field and put a low cross to the penalty kick spot where it was shot over the goal at point blank range on an open net. The Dolphins would not allow the Hawks to come that close to scoring the rest of the game as they parked the bus and played for the tie as they will have their player’s back from suspension for the CCNY game on Saturday in which the Dolphins will want to win to garner the No. 1 seed heading into the CUNYAC Postseason Tournament.
