Will Fonseca’s history-making men’s basketball season is not officially over yet. The City University of New York Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year in 2014-15 received another major citation today, with a first-team All-Atlantic Region selection from D3hoops.com. Recognizing three all-star teams from eight NCAA Division III regions, players chosen to the D3hoops.com All-Region team are eligible for All-American selection. The All-American teams will be announced at the end of this week, in conjunction with the Division III men’s and women’s championships.
Fonseca had a season for the ages, and was certainly a candidate for Player of the Year honors as well. The only junior named to the first-team, Fonseca averaged a whopping 26.1 points per contest in 29 games, good for a College of Staten Island single-season record of 732 total points. He would finish with 351 rebounds, good for a CUNYAC-best 12.5 per game, complete with a team-high 49 blocked shots. Fonseca also placed second on the squad in assists (65) and steals (44).
Fonseca, playing in only his second season with the Dolphins and his first as a starter, eclipsed the 1,000-point career total in late-February, then broke the single season scoring record in CSI’s 84-80 double-overtime win over New York University in the ECAC Metro Tournament Final, a game where he dumped 41 total points, good for the second-highest mark in CSI single-game history.
The Dolphins finished 20-9 overall this season, advancing to the CUNYAC Quarterfinals before winning their second consecutive ECAC Tournament Championship, the third title in program history.
Cabrini College’s Aaron Walton-Moss was named the Atlantic Region’s Player of the Year, while Brian Barnes (The Sage College) won Coach of the Year honors. DeSales University guard Aaron Burton took Rookie of the Year honors. Two other selections from the CUNYAC were honored. Both Brooklyn College’s Egzon Gjonbalaj and Baruch College’s Granville Gittens were named to the second-team.
