The College of Staten Island women’s softball squad wrapped up a busy weekend with a doubleheader sweep of CUNYAC-rivals York College played earlier today in Queens. CSI won by scores of 14-0 and 15-0, as freshman Nicolette Trapani registered her first perfect game in the second game of the twinbill. CSI moved to 15-5 with the pair of wins overall, and 5-1 in CUNYAC play. York dropped to 0-18, 0-6, respectively.
As the scores suggested, CSI did dominate from start to finish in this afternoon’s competition. Jacqueline Cautela got the game one start for CSI, and tossed a two-hit shutout, fanning six batters as CSI was helped along by a whopping seven York errors. Meanwhile, CSI scattered seven runs in the first, one each in the second and third, and five more in the fifth inning to power to a 14-0 win.
Chyanne Gilliam got the scoring started with a two-run homerun, scoring Brittany Smith. Maxine Jasko scored an RBI-triple in the first inning, and would later score on a bases-loaded wild pitch. A pair of walks by York starter Darlene Judan allowed two more runners to cross in the first. Cautela helped her own cause with an RBI-double in the second, and later in the contest, Christina Tufano scored in a pair of runs with a single.
The errors by the Cardinals helped tremendously, as 10 of CSI’s 14 runs were unearned in the game. Cautela, Gilliam, and Jasko all finished with a pair of hits apiece.
In game two, it was Nicolette Trapani who stole the show, pitching a perfect game while fanning 14. She retired the first 9 York batters all via the strikeout, and Trapani made the only fielding play of the game for the Dolphins as well, fielding a groundout hit back to her by Karen Werner.
Smith singled in Cautela to give CSI a 1-0 lead and that’s all the Dolphins would need, but seven more runs were scored, powered by a two-RBI double by Cautela, to make it 8-0. CSI added four more in the second, another in the third and two more in the fourth to complete the day. Again, York errors helped, five in all, leading to five of CSI’s runs to cross unearned.
Cautela would finish 2-2 with 3 RBI in game two, while Gianna DeCesare went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
CSI continues their CUNYAC stretch tomorrow, when they travel to Lehman College for a doubleheader beginning at 5:30pm.
