On the heels of their first CUNYAC Regular Season Championship since 2003, the College of Staten Island men’s soccer program will embark on the 2015 season with rejuvenated focus and for a successful defense of that title, and have released their 2015 schedule. The calendar features 16 contests beginning September 2 and culminating with the CUNYAC Championship Tournament in early-Novemer.
CSI will start the campaign ambitiously. The Dolphins will play six straight non-conference contests in a span of less than two weeks, with five of those contests on the road. The team will open against Purchase State on September 2 in Purchase, and then follow with a Labor Day weekend tournament at Drew University where they will tackle The College of New Jersey and the host Rangers.
CSI’s home opener comes against Farmingdale State College on September 14. The Dolphins took a wild, 4-3, double-overtime winner from the Rams last year on the road. Five days later, the Dolphins open up CUNYAC play with a three-game road set beginning at Met Oval to take on defending Tournament Champion Baruch College at 5:00pm.
The Dolphins will play the first of three CUNYAC home contests on September 30 against John Jay College. It will mark Youth Day at the College, when the team will welcome in youth programs from Staten Island to take part in pre-game festivities. Four days later, the Dolphins will don pink jerseys for Breast Cancer Awareness Day when they host CCNY in a rematch from last year’s 1-0 CSI victory which clinched the Dolphins” regular season title a year ago.
Senior Day will cap the home portion of the Dolphins’ season on October 14, when the Dolphins host Berkeley College (NJ) at 4pm.
The eight-team CUNYAC Tournament will start on October 28 with quarterfinal play at higher-seeded teams before the tournament switches over to host Brooklyn College on October 31 (semifinals) and November 7 (championship). CSI fell in last year’s semifinal leg of the tournament to eventual champion Baruch.
The Dolphins finished 10-9-2 a year ago, with a 6-1-1 CUNYAC mark, overturning a rather sour 0-5 start. The team graduated only a pair of seniors from a year ago, and stands to return a healthy nucleus of the squad from a season ago, led by fourth-year head coach John Tardy.
