The College of Staten Island women’s tennis team extended their perfect start to the season with a dominant 9-0 road victory over CUNYAC foe York College.
After battling to a 6-3 home win over Hunter in their season opener, the Dolphins were on cruise control in Queens as they improved to 2-0 overall and in conference play. It was the season opener for York.
A pair of Dolphin freshmen scored their first career victories in the match, as Mariah DeGuia and Samantha Pillarella each picked up singles and doubles wins, dropping just two combined games across four matches.
The Dolphins seized control early in doubles play, with the new-look duo of DeGuia and Hannah Bruschi racing to an 8-0 decision at the top spot. In the lower flights, York got on the board but ultimately dropped two identical 8-1 contests.
Singles play was equally lopsided, highlighted by four 6-0, 6-0 scorelines in favor of the Dolphins. Samantha Maizer, who was rested in doubles play, followed up her second flight win against Hunter with a shutout in the top spot over York’s Cris Bautista. The other shutout victors were Tristiana Adragna at the number two flight, Bruschi at three, and Pillarella at six.
The Dolphins will look to continue their strong start tomorrow, when they host Stockton University at 12:30 PM.
