College of Staten Island student-athletes took to a different kind of exercise on Sunday, lending a hand and walking towards a cure with the great folks at CaringKind for the annual Staten Island Alzheimer’s Walk at South Beach. Organized by Head Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Coach Lak Wai (Larry) Ng, many individuals from volleyball, as well as women’s tennis and several other athletes wore the blur and orange proudly on the gorgeous, helping the organization raise over $30k is much needed support for Alzheimer’s research as patient aid.
Formerly known as the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter, CaringKind is New York City’s leading expert on Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving. With over 30 years of experience, we work directly with our community partners to develop the information, tools and training to support individuals and families affected by dementia. Each year, they organize a walk on Staten Island’s South Beach Boardwalk. A staunch supporter, Ng organized an Alzheimer’s Awareness Day on September 23 at the College, during CSI’s home trimatch against Brooklyn College and William Paterson University. Sunday’s effort brought his team and others full-circle, and the organization was able to raise over $31.000 in total with almost 250 official registrants comprised of 35 teams.
CSI student-athletes helped with registration for the event, as well as community outreach with Danny the Dolphin and participating in the walk itself. The walk took place at 10am, and was followed by a reception held at Noon at Seaview Avenue and Father Capodanno Boulevard.
The walk is one of many services the organization is a part of, all in an effort to make people more aware of Alzeimer’s and patient outreach. CaringKind offers a 24-hr Helpline (646) 744-2900 run by professional staff; individual and family counseling sessions with licensed social workers; a vast network of support groups; education seminars and training programs; early stage services and a wanderer’s safety program. We believe in the power of caregiving and seek a world where everyone dealing with dementia has the support they need, when they need it.
