Join us for an Italian Heritage Month event, “The Italian American Immigrant Experience: Identities and Representations,” on Tuesday, Oct. 31 in teh Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Lecture Hall from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.
This student event will feature writer Maria Laurino, who teaches creative writing in the undergraduate program at NYU. She is the author of The Italian Americans: A History, the companion book to a four-part PBS documentary series, as well as the memoirs, Old World Daughter, New World Mother, a meditation on contemporary feminism, and the national bestseller, Were You Always an Italian? an exploration of ethnic identity. Laurino began her career as a staff writer at The Village Voice. She left that publication to serve as the chief speechwriter to former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins. Laurino’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Nation, Salon.com, and numerous publications.
Dean Gerry Milligan, Prof. Lee Papa, Prof. Maryann Feola, Prof. Giuseppe Sorrentino, and students Antoinette Galbo and Lori Lambertson will also share their personal recollections and research on this provocative topic.
A light fare of Italian refreshments will be served.
The event is a double CLUE (1 PG and 1 CC) and co-sponsored by the English, World Languages and Literatures Department., and the Office of Student Life/Pluralism and Diversity.
