I write to share the bittersweet news that Dr. Michael Steiper, who has served as our Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs since October 2022, will be leaving the College of Staten Island to assume the presidency of SUNY Purchase. Please join me in congratulating him on this exciting new chapter in his career.
During his tenure at CSI, Dr. Steiper has been a transformative leader and a tireless advocate for academic excellence, student success, and faculty achievement. Under his leadership, the College saw an increase in first-year retention, helping to surpass enrollment targets. He played a pivotal role in securing successful reaccreditation outcomes, hiring new faculty and academic leadership, and reorganizing the Provost’s Office to better support research, teaching, and professional development.
Dr. Steiper also established the Provost’s Council and strengthened shared governance through improved communication and data-informed decision-making. His efforts helped CSI secure funding to refresh STEM labs and ensured our active participation in key CUNY-wide initiatives such as the Inclusive Economy and AAS Redesign.
Beyond the numbers, Dr. Steiper brought a deep commitment to collaboration, transparency, and equity. His leadership has left a lasting impact on our institution, and we are grateful for his service.
In addition to his regular championing of faculty and staff accomplishments (including his regular “faculades” delivered at the Faculty Senate), Dr. Steiper was a thought partner to me and I valued his insight and perspective. Our daily check-ins allowed for outside-the-box suggestions and candid conversations that advanced our Mission and allowed us the freedom to challenge conventional thinking about our approach to institutional challenges. He bleeds Dolphin blue and I know this passion will serve him and the community of Purchase College well.
We wish Dr. Steiper continued success as he takes on this new role at SUNY Purchase. His vision, dedication, and integrity will no doubt serve that community as well as they have served ours.
With appreciation and best wishes,
Timothy G. Lynch, Ph.D.
President
