On Friday May 19 at 10:15 a.m., the College of Staten Island (CSI) will become more lively and colorful thanks to the children from the Lifestyles for the Disabled Greenhouse Program.

Lifestyles, a not-for-profit serving developmentally disabled clients, operate a highly successful greenhouse on the grounds of the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, immediately adjacent to CSI.

The children from Lifestyles will be transplanting finely cultivated flowering plants from their greenhouse into containers outside of the college’s Children’s Center and Sports and Recreation Center.

The Lifestyles Greenhouse Program also provides other community services such as maintaining cemeteries, growing seeds to maturity, and preparing table settings for community fundraising events.

For the last eight years, they have assisted with the beautification of the CSI campus, as well as provide flowers for major CSI events such as commencement.

According to Richard Salinardi, executive director of Lifestyles, his group provided the “magnificent” table settings for the recent CSI Foundation recognition event in honor of community leader Sally Williams at the Hilton Garden Inn.

“It is truly a sincere relationship with the college, one where everyone benefits,” he added.

Anna Daurio, who runs the Greenhouse Program, will be supervising the planting activity at CSI.
